From the baseline period in November 2020 to August 2021, the average number of delay days per patient in a Community Hospital reduced from 10.1 days to 5.7 days, a reduction of 4.5 days per patient. This resulted in 6,100 more days per year that patients were able to spend at home during this time.

In Brentwood and Thurrock community hospitals, teams have now successfully embedded a new system for improved daily visibility of the reasons for discharge delays so that they could be effectively tackled. In weekly meetings themes are now directly addressed and where needed – escalated to the appropriate forums.
